We deeply miss Mathew H. M. Lee, MD, Vice-Chair of our Board of Directors, former chair of the Department of Rehabilitation Medicine and medical director of the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. Dr. Lee served the Rusk Institute for more than 45 years, creating a rich legacy of humanism in medicine and making important advances in the treatment and research of chronic pain, thermography, acupuncture, and music therapy. He passed away in Hawaii on March 11, 2011. He has trained and mentored many exceptional doctors, and believed that Music was the greatest under-used natural resource, and encouraged many young musicians in their pursuit of music and medicine. Please see Dr. Lee's obituary in the Newsroom.
We shall miss Mrs. Avery Fisher as a long-term and generous member of our Board of Directors. Affectionately known as Janet, she attended many of our events with her friends, adding cachet and panache to our galas, and gave encouragement to our young members. Her nurturing love and support of the children's growth and development has permitted COS to flourish and develop many exciting programs to continue Dr. H. T. Ma's vision to "teach children the language of music". We hope to perpetuate her memory, and continue to support talented children with financial need by establishing a named scholarship in her honor at COS.
We shall miss Isi as a a valued member of our Artistic Advisory Board, for his sense of humor, his love of music and his encouragement to young musicians. My brother and I grew up under his wings and will always remember fondly the unforgettable evenings and nights we spent on Christmas Eve, playing chamber music amongst our peers, and with the great musicians, until shortly before midnight, when we rushed to hear the Schneider Orchestra (now the New York String Orchestra) play their concert, and then return to their apartment for more food, merriment and music until the wee hours of the morning. Michael and I, and the entire COS family sends our condolences to the Cohen family, especially Erica & Alan.
We shall miss Dr. McCarty as a great scientist, and our first Chairman of the Board. Dr. McCarty was infinitely patient with our growth process, as we emerged from a small group of students playing together in our basement to the large family that COS has become. His nurturing love and support of the children's growth and development has permitted COS to flourish and develop many exciting programs to continue Dr. H. T. Ma's vision to "teach children the language of music". We hope to perpetuate his memory, and continue to support talented children with financial need by establishing a named chair in his honor at COS.
